My Experience with Tree Service Company

Professional gardener pruning a tree
Well, the first time I ever tried my hand with tree service was back when I was just a boy of about 17 years old. I was over at a friend’s house and his father came in, the guy’s name was Bill, and he recruited us to do a little tree service out in the back yard. It seemed that a tree branch had grown into the power lines that ran along his back fence and the city had ordered Bill to have it trimmed back.

“I’ll pay you guys $30 for the tree service,” said Bill as he sipped a scotch on the rocks. He went back inside the house to watch some golf on the television and left my friend and I with a saw.

Now my friend was a rather lazy fellow and also was one of those guys who always had a little money on him, so the $30 wasn’t enough to get him to climb a tree and do a little tree service. But me, I was one of those guys who was always broke and could use a little extra spending cash, so I jumped at the opportunity to do a little tree service.

Looking back, I kind of feel like Bill got off pretty cheap, having gotten some legit tree service for only $30. But at the time, I was as happy as a clam to get that money.

Without even using a ladder, I remember I simply climbed up onto the fence that ran along the back of Bill’s property, stood up on it and pulled myself into the tree with the saw somehow clipped from my belt. My friend stood below watching me, giving such helpful hints as, “Be careful,” and “Don’t fall!” The whole tree service operation was pretty unsafe. But I was hungry for that $30.

As it happened, I managed to go out on a limb for Bill and give him the full tree service required that day and I sawed that protruding branch right off. The powerlines were once again free to exist in space with no branches running into them. I think I may have gotten a bit of sawdust in the eye, but was otherwise no worse for wear.  No free discount but safety is that value they need!

After we dragged the branch that I had sawed off on my little tree service escapade to the curb, my buddy had the nerve to ask for a cut of the $30 fee I was getting for the tree service. You’d better believe I told him to stick that nonsense right up his butt because all he did was stand around in the shade while I was doing all the work and braving all the danger and violating all the local codes regarding landscape contracting and tree service.

I’ve learned a thing or two about tree service since those days, but the most important lesson I’ve learned since then was to not undersell myself or do crazy things for a little cash. The next most important thing would probably be safety.

There are a lot of safety considerations for tree service workers, but that’s a story for another day.

This company was located in Sterling Heights btw

Tree Service Company Background

Before running this website full time I used to own a tree service company with my friend from last post.

What do you think about when you think about trees? Well I think about fire wood. I used to work for this guy that had a tree service. We would have jobs that would consume of cutting trees that have fallen through house and trees that’s people just didn’t want in there yard. Well, we would cut in up in pieces and load it up on the trailer. After, that we would grind the stump out until there was nothing there.
This is the funny part of this story. After we cleared all the small limbs, we would head back to has house. This where it gets funny at. This guy had a big wood cutter. We would cut these logs into perfect pieces of firewood. Then have us deliver it to places that had already had orders in, and some were people at there houses. Here’s the punch line. I was only on the clock for cutting the tree down and cutting in up then putting it on the trailer. So, I never got paid for the firewood. He said that wasn’t in the treeservice company time. Man, I couldn’t do nothing but laugh, because I didn’t want to go to jail.
So the next day we went and did another job and he tried to do the same thing , by having us cut it up in firewood. I told him I was off the clock. Lol. That was when I became part owner of the tree service and selling firewood. I own 45% of the tree service and 50% of selling the firewood.
From there we were getting jobs all over Warner, GA. It so big that I had to hire more people and open more locations. We had locations all the way to Huntsville Alabama. I owned 95% each location I opened by my self.
As time goes on I get so big I bought him out and I owned 100% of the company.
One thing you have to remember about starting a tree service business is the seasonality of the work. Early spring and late fall are the times for pruning and thinning trees. Work concerned with trees damaged by strong winds is likely to be in the winter time. While there may be quite a bit of work clearing away trees knocked down by winter storms, the weather itself will make it difficult for you to operate your business. Also bear in mind that you may have to travel in the course of your work. The greater the geographical area you can cover, the greater your chance of getting work.
Tree cutting businesses provide a variety of services, including tree branch trimming and tree cutting and stump removal. Knowledge of common types of trees in your area and common tree problems helps increase your business and remain competitive with other local tree cutting services. Attract commercial and residential customers by providing quality customer service. Referrals from satisfied customers encourages others to choose your services. Depending on where you live, tree cutting services may be needed any time during the year.
I started out with just a pickup truck and a couple of saws and little knowledge of climbing and the proper way to prune trees. I almost killed myself a couple of times because of it. I strongly discourage anyone from following the path I did, even though I consider my business very successful today (20 years later). The ISA and TCIA have many videos and books on how to prune and you could easily spend your $5000 on those alone. A good tree saddle, gaffs (for removals only), ropes, rigging gear, pole saws and pruners, handsaws, pulleys, loop runners, carabiners etc. will easily eat up all of your start up money. You also need to carry insurance. Just one piece of my rigging gear, the GRCS, cost $2500. This is not a business that you can properly equip for $5000. I would strongly suggest you work for a good tree company for at least 3 months to get an idea of what this is all about. You will be able to make a better decision on whether you really want to get in the tree business and if so, what equipment or gear to buy.
The firewood business is better than ever. The high cost of fuel oil and heating gas has created high demand for firewood. Every state will have firewood customers. People in southern states like to have a warm toasty fire to watch and heat their homes as much as those in northern climates.

Is it beneficial to get Free Stuff? Learning to Sell

I have been reading a book by Grant Cardone called Sell or Be Sold and I wanted to share with you some of the insights that I’ve learned since reading this book and how it relates to this site which is about getting free stuff. First of all the interesting point he makes about sales is that sales is fundamental to life in fact we’re all selling in our life, its about getting our way in life. Whether its in our relationship, business or with strangers someone is always doing the selling and the other is getting sold. For example, selling is not some abstract skill that only professional salespeople know how to do, its a skill that even young children use on their parents to get their way.

It is about the power of persuasion to influence other into doing something or giving you something that you want. There is nothing evil or unethical about selling someone, even though the popular media likes to label this activity as something scuzzy, yes there are a lot of bad salespeople out there that ruin the image of that profession but to claim you don’t want to sale means you will always work for a paycheck and trade your time in for dollars. When you learn the skill of selling it actually frees you to becoming someone that can cut his own pay check. The skill of selling is the path to richest.

Why seeking free stuff in life can be harmful?

Yes this site offers incentives for you to get active and learn cool insights about business and entrepreneurship, like becoming a tree service guy which we’ll go over in a little bit but how can actually chronically seeking free handouts in life ruin you as person, you see its impossible to become successful without hard work, its impossible to reach the top 1% without stacking and squeezing more hours and time out of the day. It’s impossible to make it into the big leagues without first going through the struggle and hustling like your life depend on it. This whole notion of law of attraction can actually be detrimental to life, because its this idea that you can relax and let go and god or universe will take care of the rest. Look we need to become more responsible in our lifetime, we need to become that being that takes 100% responsibility for everything that happens in life, we need to take responsibility for even the bad stuff that happens because that is the direct path to personal empowerment.

By taking more responsibility in life we propel ourselves into a zone where we can accomplish anything and everything we set out to do, its because people do not want to take responsibility for the failures in life, that they remain stuck at the level that they are at. Its by taking 100% responsibility for everything in one’s life including all the challenges as well as the insufficiency that we really begin to rise up and grow into a champion.

Expanding our responsibility is the direct path to personal empowerment.

Only reason you are not where you want to be is because the bullshit story you’re telling to …yourself!

We justify, complain & blame and when we do this, we do not move forward anywhere in life.

We are all creatures that were programmed with an innate desire to seek love & approval from others. And we spend our whole lives looking for that in others that also are seeking love & approval from others. It’s game of blind hide and seek which causes us to look in the wrong place thinking our savior is in the other person, however the only love & approval we can gain in the world is through ourselves, it is only experienced in the giving of it, and then it is reflected in the receiving.

What does have to do anything with sales and business? Well the other day I was inside reading a novel and a big storm came and knocked down one of our Oak Trees, which came crashing down onto our driveway effectively blocking the way out for my cars.  I had to call the tree service guy quick because I had an important meeting tomorrow morning, and when he answered the phone and immediately proceeded to tell me that its impossible to come out that day because he was already booked up, I used one of Grant’s suggestions to always agree to their objections so I did “Yes I completely understand that you are booked up, there’s a big storm out there, you will for sure be booked up, hey maybe if you help me out this one deal I got a lot more customers that need to tree service that I can send your way.” While staying in complete rapport with the guy I steered him in a different direction, its like judo, first accept completely and do a redirect.

This one tip will forever improve my relations with people and so he did come out at the very end of the day and removed the tree for me happily and we made great conversation, it was actually the owner himself and he was a great friendly man and I told him I’ll send more business his way.

Btw here is his site: Grand Rapids Tree Service

If you ever need tree service from GR, make sure to give this guy a call! he’ll do a fine job and he has over 25 years experience.

Becoming a man of influence to get Free Stuff?

I have been studying success for a long time and have read numerous self-development books over the years. And so the next topic of discussion for you guys to participate in so you can win a free iPhone is this.

How can getting free stuff all your life become detrimental to your well being?

We often hear the terms like oh that boy is spoiled or that boy doesn’t know what he’s doing, or he can’t live on his own, etc. What does it mean to be spoiled, what does it mean to not know how to live life to one’s highest potential? How do people get to that point?

Here is an interesting food for thought.

You take a really beautiful girl for example, growing up through elementary, middle school & high school, she gets all the attention and affection that any human being could want. She is given free dinners by guys and guys buy her other free brand clothes and jewelry. On the surface she appears to have the most wonderful life any human being could ever want, just by being born as a pretty person.

Yet what is under the surface as she keeps getting treasured with free gifts is that her will power and mental ability to go after what she wants in life is slowly fading. Because she is always given free stuff this is what she begins to expect for everything in life. She is losing the drive to go out and make it on her own. Her mental fortitude gets weaker the more free stuff she gets.

Now the danger of this is two-fold, she will continue to rely on others to provide for her using her looks as the only value the only problem with this approach is that we all get old, and looks is something that begins to fade as we age.

What we may begin to find is that once we get on fire for something in life, for that goal and the vision, and get the thrill out of just pushing towards our purpose, then that’s where the real joys of life is. It’s not in the actual getting of the thing nor is it in the actual items we think we want, the only happiness we feel when we get those things is momentary and fleeting. Only true happiness comes from self-acceptance and evolution.

Growing as a human being and reaching new levels of success, that is true happiness and joy in life not something fleeting.

Free iPhone 6 Project

This blog will be about creating various campaigns of giving away free electronics to its readers, but the catch-22 is its going to be an educational type blog and the free stuff will only be earned to those that participate in our discussions and sometimes submits their progress in life after they incorporated the various life lessons that will be shared here.

The intention of this blog is to educate the youth on what it takes to become successful or how do we achieve our goals in real & practical ways.

So the first topic of discussion is What is Willpower and how do we develop it? Conversely what weakens our willpower? & How does this pertain to success in life?

Any thoughts?

Will power is defined as the faculty by which a person decides on and initiates action.

I believe if young people could understand this one aspect it will propel the into becoming very successful, willpower allows us to take action sounds simple enough but in a world of digital media and plenty of discussion many of us are getting lost in the noise of everything out there and not developing the will power required to see through our actions and daily grind to the end.

Will power is not about something we are born with and naturally have at all times. It comes and goes, and some people have stronger will than others. It is like a muscle that must be consciously practiced and developed. Will power becomes weaker when one lives a life where they do not have to take big time life decisions.

For example, if a 25 year old lives with their parents and never moves out, their will power will slowly erode away and they will be stuck in a life path where they aren’t going anywhere in life. This is such a dangerous thing because it is not like a blatant illness where people can obviously tell that person is getting sicker. Will power is something most of us do no witness declining like all things if it is not consciously worked on it degrades. The danger of weak will power is that you become a human being that lives at the effect of his or her circumstances, and you fall down from living as an empowered human that lives as the creator of his or her circumstances.

The implications are enormous. Jordan Belfort the Wolf of Wallstreet, said there are two people in life. Those that get what they want, and those that live as creature of circumstances.

I no longer want to play the game that other people get rich, I want to play the game of making deals and becoming wealthy for my pure hard work and dedication to becoming the best I can be. To become the person that achieves goals despite the challenges, never takes no for an answer. Understanding and willing to change direction but heads down each plan with full force and full commitment.
